Fire Alarm Commissioning & Servicing in London
Installing a fire alarm is only part of the job. Before a system is handed over, it must be commissioned to prove it works as designed, and once in use it needs regular servicing to stay reliable.
We provide fire alarm commissioning and servicing for both domestic and commercial properties across London, in line with BS 5839. As well as systems we have installed, we can often take over systems fitted by other contractors.
About the service
Commissioning is the full test of a new or modified system before handover. Servicing is the regular inspection and testing that keeps it working afterwards. Both are carried out by engineers qualified in BS 5839-1 and BS 5839-6.
Our fire alarm commissioning includes:
- Testing every detector, sounder and manual call point
- Checking the control panel, zones and fault signals
- Checking sounder levels and standby battery capacity
- Confirming the installed system matches the design
- Issuing commissioning certificates and handover documents
- Showing you how to use the system and record tests
Commissioning & Servicing for Homes (BS 5839-6)
Domestic fire alarm systems should be tested and maintained in line with BS 5839-6. For landlords and HMO managers, keeping a record of testing and servicing helps show that the system is being properly looked after.
We commission and service fire alarm systems in:
- Houses and flats
- HMOs and shared houses
- Landlord and rental properties
- Sheltered and supported housing
Commissioning & Servicing for Businesses (BS 5839-1)
For non-domestic premises, BS 5839-1:2025 recommends that the system is inspected and serviced by a competent person at intervals of no more than six months, with a weekly test carried out by the user. We offer fire alarm servicing contracts that keep your system compliant and your logbook up to date.
We commission and service commercial systems in:
- Offices and workspaces
- Shops and retail units
- Restaurants, cafés and drive-throughs
- Warehouses and industrial units
- Communal areas of blocks of flats
For the latest changes to the standard, see BSI’s guide to BS 5839-1:2025.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is fire alarm commissioning?
Commissioning is the full test of a new or modified fire alarm system before it is handed over. It confirms the system works correctly and matches the design, and it is recorded on a commissioning certificate in line with BS 5839.
How often should a fire alarm be serviced?
For commercial premises, BS 5839-1 recommends servicing by a competent person at intervals of no more than six months. Domestic systems should be tested and maintained in line with BS 5839-6, and how often depends on the type of system.
Do I need to test my fire alarm between services?
Yes. In commercial premises, a weekly test using a different manual call point each time is recommended, with results recorded in the logbook. At home, test your smoke alarms regularly using the test button.
Can you service a system installed by another company?
In most cases, yes. We will inspect the system first and let you know if anything needs attention before we take it on.
What happens if faults are found?
We explain the problem, give you a quote for any repairs and record the findings on your certificate or logbook.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. We issue a commissioning certificate for new or modified systems and an inspection and servicing certificate after each service, in line with BS 5839.
