How often should emergency lighting be tested?
BS EN 50172 sets out a routine testing schedule. In short, there are two key tests.
Because the annual test drains the batteries, we plan it for a quiet time, for example outside opening hours. As a result, the batteries can recharge before the building is busy again.
Testing to BS 5266-1:2025
BS 5266-1:2025 was published in October 2025. As a result, it replaced the 2016 edition. Importantly, it now covers standby lighting and local area lighting, as well as emergency escape lighting.
It is also used alongside BS EN 1838:2024 and BS EN 50172:2024. In addition, the new edition includes a clause on photometric verification. In other words, light levels should be checked against the design to confirm the system still performs as intended.

Who needs emergency lighting testing?
Most non-domestic buildings with emergency lighting need regular tests. However, BS 5266-1 does not apply to private homes. Instead, it covers the common access routes in blocks of flats and maisonettes.
Who is responsible for testing?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the "responsible person" must make sure fire safety measures are maintained. In particular, this includes emergency lighting. For example, you should book a test when:
- Your last annual test was more than a year ago
- Your logbook is missing or incomplete
- Lights stay off during a monthly test
- Charging indicators are off or flashing
- Your fire risk assessor or insurer asks for records
