Consumer Unit Upgrade in London
A consumer unit upgrade replaces your old fuse box with a modern metal board, because older boards often give little or no protection against shock and fire. As a result, every circuit gets its own RCBO and your home is much safer.

Because every consumer unit upgrade follows the same careful process, you always know what to expect. Therefore, you also know exactly what you are paying for.
Survey and load check
First, we inspect your existing board and circuits, because we need to size the new unit correctly.
Metal RCBO consumer unit
Next, we fit a non-combustible metal unit. In addition, every circuit gets its own 30 mA RCBO.
Surge protection (SPD)
We also fit a surge protection device, so sensitive electronics are protected from voltage spikes.
Testing every circuit
After that, we test each circuit. As a result, any hidden faults are found before the board goes live.
EIC and Part P notification
Finally, you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, and we notify the work through NAPIT.
Labelling and tidy finish
In addition, every circuit is clearly labelled, and we leave the area clean and tidy.
Consumer unit upgrade to BS 7671
We install every board to BS 7671, because these are the UK wiring regulations. In particular, Amendment 4:2026 was published in April 2026, and it fully replaces the previous edition on 15 October 2026.
For example, the new rules extend AFDD protection in HMOs and high-rise residential buildings. We also fit SPDs and non-combustible enclosures, so your consumer unit upgrade meets the current rules from day one.
Is your fuse board out of date?
For example, many London homes still have boards from the 1970s to the 2000s. However, most of them no longer meet current safety standards.
Rewireable fuse boxes
Because these old boxes use fuse wire, they have no RCD protection. Therefore, they should be replaced as soon as possible.
Split-load RCD boards
On these boards, one fault can also trip several circuits at once. However, an RCBO board keeps each circuit separate.
Plastic consumer units
Because of a 2016 rule change, domestic consumer units must have a non-combustible enclosure. As a result, most plastic units are now out of date.
Who needs a consumer unit upgrade?
We also carry out a consumer unit upgrade for homeowners, landlords and businesses. In particular, we often upgrade boards after an EICR or during a refurbishment.
When is an upgrade recommended?
In short, you should book a survey when:
- You still have rewireable fuses or, alternatively, an old split-load board
- Circuits have no RCD or RCBO protection at all, for example on older boards
- Your consumer unit is plastic and therefore not fire-resistant
- An EICR has given a C2 or FI code
- The RCD trips often, even though nothing seems wrong
- You are adding circuits, an EV charger or a kitchen

Consumer unit upgrade FAQs
Do I need a consumer unit upgrade?
Not always, however, an upgrade is often needed after an EICR, or when you add new circuits during a refurbishment.
How long will the power be off?
Because we plan ahead, we aim to restore power within 2–3 hours. In addition, we bring a portable power bank, so you can keep your internet and laptop running.
What certificate will I receive?
First, you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). Also, we notify the work under Part P of the Building Regulations through NAPIT.
Will a new consumer unit make my whole installation compliant?
Not on its own, however, because we test every circuit during the upgrade, so any faults are clearly explained and quoted separately.
Do landlords need an RCBO consumer unit?
By law, landlords must keep the installation safe and also have a satisfactory EICR. Therefore, an old fuse box that gets a C2 code usually needs replacing.
Do I need AFDDs in my new board?
For example, Amendment 4 requires AFDDs on socket circuits in HMOs and some other buildings. However, for most houses they are optional.
