Smoke Alarm Installation in London
Our smoke alarm installation service covers mains-wired smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms for homes and rental properties across London. Because we design every system to BS 5839-6, you get the right alarm in the right room, all interlinked so they sound together.
For instance, we work for homeowners, private landlords, letting agents and managing agents. In addition, we hold the BS 5839-6 qualification, the code of practice for fire alarms in homes, so we can tell you exactly what your property needs.
- BS 5839-6 qualified
- Mains-wired and interlinked
- Landlord rules covered

What our smoke alarm installation includes
From a single replacement to a full interlinked system, we handle the whole job, including the paperwork.
Mains-wired smoke alarms
First, we fit mains-powered smoke alarms with a sealed backup battery in hallways, landings and living rooms.
Heat alarms for kitchens
We also fit heat alarms in kitchens, because a smoke alarm there would go off every time you cook.
Carbon monoxide alarms
In addition, we fit CO alarms in rooms with a boiler, gas fire or wood burner.
Interlinked systems
Every alarm is linked by cable or radio, so a fire in the kitchen also sets off the alarm upstairs.
Alarm replacement
However, most alarms need replacing after about 10 years, so we swap out old units and check the wiring.
Testing and paperwork
Finally, we test every alarm together and give you the paperwork, which landlords can keep for their records.
Smoke alarm installation to BS 5839-6
BS 5839-6 is the code of practice for fire alarms in homes. For example, for rented homes, it recommends Grade D1 alarms, which are mains-powered with a sealed backup battery, covering Category LD2: the escape routes plus the rooms where a fire is most likely to start.
In addition, the law sets a minimum for landlords. Under the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations, every storey needs a working smoke alarm, and councils can fine landlords up to £5,000 if they do not comply.
Which level of protection do you need?
Choosing the right category is the first step in any smoke alarm installation, because it decides which rooms get an alarm.
LD3: minimum
Alarms in hallways and landings only. However, BS 5839-6 no longer recommends this for rented homes.
LD2: recommended
Escape routes plus high-risk rooms, such as the kitchen and living room. Therefore, it is the usual choice for rented homes.
LD1: maximum
Alarms in every room where a fire could start, except bathrooms. As a result, a fire is detected wherever it begins.
Smoke alarm installation for homes and rentals
Also, we fit alarms in houses and flats of every age, for example Victorian terraces, period conversions and new builds.
When you need new smoke alarms
As a rule, you should book a visit if any of these apply:
- For example, your alarms are battery-only, or more than 10 years old
- Also, an alarm keeps chirping, even with a new battery
- A new tenancy is about to start, because alarms must work on day one
- In addition, you are planning a loft conversion, extension or rewire
- Your alarms are not interlinked; therefore, one can sound while the others stay silent
- Finally, you have a boiler, gas fire or wood burner but no CO alarm
Landlords can also read the official rules in the GOV.UK guidance for landlords and tenants.

Smoke alarm installation FAQs
How much does smoke alarm installation cost?
It depends on how many alarms you need and whether wiring is already in place. Therefore, we give you a free fixed quote after a quick survey or a few photos.
Do landlords need mains-wired smoke alarms?
The law only requires a working smoke alarm on every storey, so battery alarms can be legal. However, BS 5839-6 recommends mains-wired Grade D1 alarms for all rented homes, and their sealed batteries cannot be removed by tenants.
What is the difference between a smoke alarm and a heat alarm?
A smoke alarm detects smoke, while a heat alarm reacts to a rise in temperature. As a result, heat alarms suit kitchens, where cooking would set off a smoke alarm.
Where should smoke alarms go?
In the hallway and landing on every floor, plus the living room for Category LD2. However, kitchens get a heat alarm instead, and alarms should never go in bathrooms.
How often should smoke alarms be tested?
BS 5839-6 recommends testing them once a month by pressing the test button. In addition, most alarms need replacing every 10 years.
Can you add a carbon monoxide alarm to the system?
Yes, if the manufacturer allows it, mains-powered CO alarms can be interlinked with your smoke and heat alarms, so every alarm sounds together.
